What is Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy?

Pelvic Health with Dr. Maureen Mason

Pelvic floor physical therapy (PT) is treatment specifically tailored to the structures, conditions, and problems related to the pelvic floor muscles. Pelvic floor (PT) helps clarify the causes of pelvic floor dysfunction and provide treatment with a focus on lifestyle and habit training, exercise, manual therapy, and breathwork. Health education, health trackers, and specialty equipment may be used, as well as team work with other providers to meet client needs. Conditions treated may include recovery from childbirth, prostatectomy, bladder infections and over active bladder, or other conditions.

  • Pelvic Floor

The “pelvic floor” is made up of the muscles and ligaments that support the urinary, bowel and reproductive organs. The pelvic floor muscles help control bladder, bowel, and sexual functions. These muscles also work as part of the core for stability, mobility, and respiration.

  • Dysfunction

Pelvic Floor Dysfunction may occur due to genetics, health history, improper habits, lifestyle influences, and a lack of proper control of the pelvic floor muscles, or other factors. Bladder leaks, constipation, pelvic pain and sexual health problems are all types of pelvic floor dysfunction.

  • Pelvic Floor Therapy

Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy treats the symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction to restore muscle coordination. This may include manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, electrical stimulation, biofeedback, and breathwork.

Client Results

  • "I was surprised to get my sex life back, after a few years of no action ..."

Client seen for Post-Menopausal Bladder and Bowel Health

“I used to need pads all the time and worry about my bladder, and now I feel confident in being home or going out for walks, no pads! Also, I have much better digestion, and no constipation now by doing the exercises, belly massage, and eating more vegetables and fruit. I am so grateful. And I was surprised to get my sex life back, after a few years of no action, I wish I had known about pelvic PT years ago!”

  • "I can finally lift my kids and feel strong again."

Client seen for Back, Pelvic, and Hip Pain during Pregnancy and Postpartum

“I am pain-free, strong, and thriving. I’m so thankful for your support (physical and emotional) during the hardest period of my life so far. The sacroiliac pain and pregnancy disability was tough, and you helped me out of it. Thanks to you, I started training at a gym that focuses on women, pelvic floor, and pre-and postpartum strength training. We practice diaphragmatic breathing and pelvic floor engagement with every move. I’m even doing some kettlebell swings; I’ve perfected them more in the last two weeks. I can finally lift my kids and feel strong again.”

  • "Thank you, you helped me get my life back."

Client seen for Bladder Leaks Post Prostatectomy

“Dr Mo, you really helped me. I was doing way too many Kegels the wrong way, and also, my Kegels were aggravating my back pain when I came to see you for a second opinion. I did not realize my fruit smoothies and the bloating were adding to the problem. I was peeing too much and needed a few pads a day, and now I rarely have 1 small leak later in the day if I drink too much at lunch, thank you, you helped me get my life back.”

    Phil S.

  • "I’m back to soccer now too; I got my life back thanks to you."

"You really helped me with my pelvic pain and belly troubles, I did not realize how much stretching I needed, how much I was tensing all the time, and how little changes in eating helped me feel better. I’m back to soccer now too; I got my life back thanks to you. You're a caring professional".
